FINALLY. i feel like ending this book has ended a chapter of my life. wait, that makes it sound like this was tough going ... which it was. but it was GOOD tough. i both love this book, and was disappointed by it. foo on me for expecting THE TERROR PART 2. it's not that. it doesn't have the same tension or horror of THE TERROR. it is instead a well organized, well structured psychological thriller. as for historical accuracy, i have to take dan at his word, but his words are so damn convincing! if for nothing else, DROOD is entertaining just for the language. for the same reason i love richard matheson, i love dan simmons - i respect and admire the ability to write taut, fast-paced fiction with perfect diction and grammar. i give this a full recommendation with the expectation that only genre fans would ever actually try it out. and even then, unless you have a 2-hour daily bus commute, i recommend the audio.
