Young Sterling's mother has died, his father is often out of town and often distracted when he is home, and his siblings have grown up and gone away. He finds company in the various wild animals he tames and raises. He has Poe the crow, skunks, woodchucks, numerous cats, and Wowser the Saint Bernard. He's also building an eighteen foot canoe in the living room.

This story is about how he found Rascal the raccoon as a baby, and how the time they spent together. While the stories of Rascal and all the cute things he did were fun, what I found most interesting was the relationship between Sterling and his dad. His dad was abstracted most of the time, but he also gave his son timely advice and a lot of freedom and understanding.
