I normally make a point not to have opinions about books I haven't read or movies I haven't seen. Not strong opinions, anyway. Well, everyone and their little sister has read these books, and has dissected them in detail in my presence, and I've seen the movie, and this story is just such a pile of shit that I feel justified in making an exception here. I don't need to slog through hundreds of pages of bad prose (my sister reports that every other word is "chagrin" or "incredulous") and really really icky gender politics (Bella believes she is NOTHING without this dude... who treats her like shit, stalks her, and whose only redeeming quality seems to be that he is OMG SO SEXY) to know that this series is dreck. I wonder how I would have felt about it if it had come out when I was twelve... and that thought makes me very very glad it didn't. Who needs to be exposed to this kind of fucked-up relationship model at an impressionable age?
