While it takes some time to get going, this is a dramatic love story. Satoko and Kiyoaki have spent their childhoods in each others' proximity, and as young adults become lovers. Both of them are such idiots at times, naive, self-centered, or cruel, but the reader still roots against their depressing fates. Mishima has a way with structure and poetic imagery.
