I liked this, but it isn't something I would re-read. The father in this story is horrible - because of his instability, the family always lives on the edge. This book really shows how at mercy people used to be when they had to rely on only one male breadwinner, or really suffer poverty.

Beth Your review was dead on. I can't imagine being in the mother's position - no good way to support your family, and a worthless husband you couldn't rely on at all. I also can't re-read this. It was too painful.
