I buy Nicholas Sparks' books almost out of habit. His stories are cheesy and predictable but I can't help myself.

This was the first book of his that stands out as less of a love story and more of a coming-of-age story. The romance part, while present, takes a back seat in the later half of the book where the story turns to Ronnie's relationship with her father. It's a different formula for him and it worked. This book had all the elements that NS does best and of course, I cried.

My problem with this book is that it was written to be turned into a movie to feature Miley Cyrus. She even got to give Ronnie's character her name. I hate NS movies and have pretty much sworn them off after The Notebook ended so terribly. This whole idea of casting the movie before the book is written really cheapened the experience for me. It made the book seem less genuine. At the end, Ronnie even composes a pop song with a country-western influence. Hmm, I can't think of anyone like that...
