A great read. Martin Beck is a very obtuse and morose character, clearly the prototype for his myriad predecessors, Erlendur, Van Veeteran and Wallander. This book was written in the 60s, so you have this interesting shapshot of police work before the era of modern communication. There's no voicemail, cell phones, email, internet. Instead you have telegrams and people having to stay near the phone lest they miss a call. It's a great time capsule.
