** spoiler alert ** This book is a bit of a mystery, almost a murder mystery. It takes place in a hospital where a 20 year old man is dying, recalling his troubling childhood with a dangerous friend. In his childhood, they make a pact, one that the man (Anwell) can't seem to escape from. He knows his friend (Finnigan) is becoming more and more dangerous, but he can't seem to get away from him. In the present, Anwell's parents grave has been found, and there's a lot of buzz around the town about it. The dog, Surrender, though Anwell's dog, is 'stolen' by Finnigan, especially when Anwell is forced to give him up in order to 'save' him from his father, who must kill him since he's been killing the neighbor's goats. Then, after agreeing to give Surrender to Finnigan, Anwell must give something back to Finnigan, and that something is Anwell's newfound love, Evangeline. In fear of losing her, he runs to her home to warn her, only to discover that Finnigan didn't arrive to do any harm to Evangeline, but his mother did arrive to humiliate him in front of the entire town. Once he arrives home, his father instructs him to get his belt for punishment for embarassing his mother in front of the town. Instead, Anwell grabs the hatchet and kills both of his parents and buries them, along with Surrender's body. Once he flashes back at the hospital, Finnigan is there, and Anwell knows the only way to be rid of Finnigan is to die himself. This made me wonder if my initial theory was true, that Finnigan is actually Anwell's split personality, having developed after Anwell accidentally killed his mentally challenged brother by stuffing him in a refriderator. This was an amazing book, if that's what really happened. If it wasn't his split personality...then it was still good, just confusing, haha.
