A short novella about the gruesome murder of a young man accused of stealing a young woman's virginity in a small Latin American town. The narrator tells the story through the voices of the townspeople who are more than willing to share their memories 26 years after the crime. (You almost feel you're watching a PBS documentary). The story is less about the murdered man and far more about the culture of a small town and the characters' reaction (and lack of action) to the rumor that the murder is about to happen. Full of dark humor, interesting characters, and far too many gory details about the actual murder for my taste!

I read this for my book group and planned to give it two stars but the discussion ended up so interesting that I felt I needed to add that third star.
