Donoghue's books make you feel like you're falling into the situation she presents, and by the end, you feel as invested as her characters are in the conflict resolution. She's also a very smart lady (I think she has a PhD in history, or historical literature) so in addition to being fun to read, her books have tons of interesting details, that never feel stuffed into the story - really, they give the story its own sense of importance, of continuity. This novel was modern in its setting. I'm looking forward to reading The Sealed Letter, which is historical, and based on a true story.
