This is a good one for historical fiction fans. Richter is very true to the dialect, but it is still very readable. And I like that he didn't romanticize the experience of this family; he just told their story. I loved the imagery of descending into the sea of trees. And I loved the image of the newlyweds at the end working side-by-side. That said, the narration felt a little jumpy to me. I would have either preferred him to stick to Sayward as the main character, or spend more time on the other family members - it felt awkward when it jumped to one of the others, and Sayward felt like a more complete character than the rest. But still a good work.
