really liked it
bookshelves: sci-fi, general-fantasy
Read in June, 1986

Classic scifi novel by Silverberg, set on one of the backwater planets of the universe, some 10,000 years after settled by humans and other aliens. Though a lot of old technology still works, no one really understands it anymore, and the book takes on some of the trappings of fantasy. The world-building here is exceptional: the cities are really alive, each vibrant and unique, and in between are well-realized mysterious wildernesses. It's a huge world, packed with mystery as much as with people and strange aliens. Also, it's probably the best juggling fantasy ever written.
