Set in 16th century Scotland, this book tells of the schemes and plots of the upper class in Scottish society as they attempt to guide their nation through political intrigue. The main character, Francis Crawford of Lymond, is a disgraced aristocrat, running a band of renegades who help both the Scots and the English, making them hated by all. The beginning of this book was slow going for me, there are dozens of characters who have a habit of quoting to each other in Latin, middle French, and German (without translation!) which was frustrating. The plot is engrossing however, so once I finally figured out who was who and on which side of the struggle, I really, really enjoyed it.
