A late Victorian novel published the same year as Dracula that was much more popular at the time. Multiple narrators, Orientalism, dark humor, and the supernatural cannot salvage the novel’s rushed climax, which concludes things with such neatness and rapidity that once scarcely believes the novel has ended. It certainly doesn’t help that what I at first hoped to be a subtle tinge of homoeroticism turned out to be plain, old predictable Victorian chauvinism.
