I found this book in an old bookshelf at my parent's house. It was my grandma's when she was in studying to be a nurse. I'm slowly making my way through the section on Insanity. It's a fascinating read so far. Take this for example:

SUPERSTITIONS CONNECTED WITH CHILDBIRTH

The influence of mental impressions upon the infant are rare but are interesting; they are wrapped up in superstition to a great extent, but one experiences cases where the evidence of the mother is so concise that it cannot be looked upon as mere coincidence. There is no scientific data, nor is there any direct nervous communication between the mother and child. Naevi or birthmarks in many cases are accounted for by some occurence which took place during pregnancy. Women say someone threw a strawberry or a cherry at them and the child was born with a strawberry or cherry mark on its face or limb. A bottle of wine may be broken, and a wine mark may be seen on the side of the lips or eye. A dog frightened the mother, and the child had a dark hairy patch on its body.
