Sylvia Faye Patterson is smart, funny, and courageous. She has been put on a very important list of African Americans that is to go to the new Central High School, which is all white. The only choice she has is whether she wants to remain on the list, or not. Draper creates a setting of the integration of schools in Little Rock,Arkansas. She has created a strong protagonist that wants to join the fight, but doesn't want those she loves getting hurt in the process. This is definantly worthy of the Coretta Scott King Award.
