This is an extraordinary, inventive book, and I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it quite as much as I did. Miéville's language takes some getting used to, but it's not pointlessly overwrought; instead, it serves to bring to life the dystopian world of the novel, dirty and full of grotesque details as it is. New Crobuzon is a place for the reader to sink into and experience, and that's what I'd recommend Perdido Street Station for, rather than its plot (which was perfectly adequate as a doorway into Miéville's world, just not very memorable otherwise).
