There is a lot of good material in this thought-provoking young adult novel by the magnificent Virginia Hamilton. There is actually more plot in this book than in most other Newbery Medal winners, and the author takes care to develop each strand carefully and completely.
Many questions are raised by the text, and answered only in the actions of the characters. Pay careful attention, or you might miss something.
"M.C. Higgins, the Great" is an unusual story of life in the mountains that was the "Holes" of its day, as pertains to awards for books written for young readers.
