really liked it
bookshelves: the-end-of-the-world, fiction, read-more-than-once
Read in January, 2016

(I originally read this book at the beginning of 2003; I remember I was reading the hardcover copy that belonged to my then-boyfriend).

I'm upgrading my 2003 "liked it" rating to "really liked it" THIRTEEN years later. Emphasis only because time flies and I'm getting old.

I like a lot of what Atwood has written over the years, and I wanted to finish out the trilogy, but this read was so long ago, I knew I needed to revisit it. Of course, I don't remember all of my feelings about it from way-back-when, but I do recall that it really freaked me out then, and it still freaks me out now. Even though the world she describes is fantastical, it is close enough to a future that can be imagined from the path that we are currently on, that it is scary to me. In fact, more scary now, because we are still on that path and have traveled even further along it. And I have a kid now, so I worry more about what world he will inherit. And in general, I just think it is a very well-crafted story.
