O, the puns, the punny puns. Dorothy was captured by spoons and taken to Utensia. Sigh. Somewhere, Piers Anthony is smirking like a madman.

Dorothy's aunt and uncle are very doe-eyed in Oz. To me, it all makes sense.

The sixth book in the series is, obviously, forced. Split between two plotlines, and one of them really doesn't deserve to be called a plotline, The Emerald City of Oz does not make for exciting reading. The Nome King wants his Magic Belt back and plans to dig a tunnel beneath the desert to reach the Emerald City while Dorothy, her aunt and uncle--who have taken to living in Oz versus losing their farm to greedy bankpushers--and a host of others are visiting various locations in the magical land, meeting oddballs and quirks at every turn.

Basically, a travelogue.

Not much happens until the very final two chapters, in which a deus ex machina solves all problems: a magical fountain with water that makes those that drink from it forget all is fortuitously right at the opening of the incoming army's tunnel. It ends on a rather dour note, a letter to Dorothy to L. Frank Baum stating that Glinda has placed a charm over Oz rendering it invisible and that there'd be no more stories to tell.
