recommended for: people who feel guilty about not having worked on their own short stories in a long time
i owned this book at one time, and then in a fit of "i'm moving, i need to jettison some crap," i gave it away or possibly sold it at half-price books. BAD IDEA. but then i found a copy of this one and a similar one ( mcsweeney's enchanted chamber of astonishing stories) at the strand and knew i had to have them back.
the nick hornby story in the book is probably my favorite, though that opinion might have been colored by the fact that i already knew and liked him. overall, there is some amazingly wonderful short story writing, the kind that reminds me that i should be writing more, but not every story in it was memorable, and i did skip a couple.
