So I sat down and read the Collected Stories straight through, which was definitely the wrong approach. Maugham, like all writers, has his favorite themes, and much of his writing draws upon his experiences and the people he knew. If you've read his better known novels, you'll recognize a lot of characters and plots in the short stories. After I had read about half the stories (and he wrote a ton of them, it's a long book) they started to seem rather repetitive. But Maugham is great, his writing is sharp and witty, and if you're smarter than me and read them in small doses, you'll really enjoy him in short form.
