it was ok

** spoiler alert ** "The Last Picture Show" was readable, but I'm happy that I read "Lonesome Dove" first, otherwise I probably would not have picked up another McMurtry book. The few redeeming characters in the book play paltry roles, then die. Sex is a weak substitute for plot with every characters' lives hinging on the next encounter. Most bizarre to me was the cow rape scene that the speaker tells as though it is the most ordinary Saturday night escapade that there is...the equivalent of playing a board game or watching a movie. Admittedly, the town is supposed to be the paradigm dry, dead-end, small, white-trash cess pool of a place, but it ceased being believable and ended up being more like something out of a stack of rejected Hitchcock movie screenplays.
