it was ok
bookshelves: graphic-novels
Read in April, 2009

I'm usually a big fan of Azzarello's writing (especially 100 Bullets) but this came across as too derivative of Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight , and frankly, I thought the art was just plain ugly. I know they were going for grotesque tortured-reality look, but to paraphrase the dumb old play Butterflies Are Free, "...vomit is reality, but I hardly call it entertainment." I don't mind it being intense or brutal when it is called for, but the art seemed to wallow in filth. Writing: Okay, not the best. Art: Yuck.

By the way, Joker may have been written before The Dark Knight came out (I don't really know), so don't get your knickers in a twist. And I bet you never heard someone quote Butterflies Are Free before.
