If you like reading Richard Russo's fiction, you will enjoy this memoir. It is full of personal insights, intellectual and emotional honesty mostly regarding his life with a challenging mother. While the entire book tells the tale of their lives together, it also explores the inescapable influence of family and hometown. Russo, like alot of us, has a love/hate relationship with his roots.
Russo has so much empathy for his mother. I liked the fact that instead of rejecting his origins, his hometown, and at times his exasperating mother he is able to see how they've influenced his life and work in a sympathetic way. It is easy to see how the writers real life influences his fiction.
