  rating: 3 of 5 stars<br/>This was the first Stephen King book I ever Read.  A friend of mine told me that Stephen Kings short stories were fantastic.  I very much enjoyed the short stories, but I found them to be a little predictable.  It may also be that many of the stories in this book were featured on the sci fi channel show "nightmares and dreamscapes".  and while reading them, I couldnt help but picture the people from the show.  Unfortunately, the show wasnt very good.  but Kings stuff never transfers well to the movies in my eyes..  anyone ever seen "thinner"?  Although I have heard "the stand" was a decent movie.  Anyway...  Looking at it from another direction, I think its really hard to write a good short story.  and of those I have read, these were very good.  King makes quick work of the character development that must be there to invest you, and he does it well.  He claims in his book that he likes the idea of being able to sit down and read a story without it taking weeks.  I agree.  These are nice little reads, and I would recommend them to those who tend to fall asleep while reading.  Since this was my first attempt at reading king, I dont feel horribly qualified to comment on his writing style.  But I felt the short stories were nothing compared to something like "the stand" or "the dark tower" series, which I just finished.
