i loved this book! i read it in 2 days ( mostly in the wee hours) and really enjoyed it. this is the first book i have read by this author and lan to check out her others. i wonder if she is the same karen white who writes romance novels - the kind where the cover depicts some nymphette in a see-through nightie wrapped around some long haired studly guy without a shirt. those i won't be reading, but i know she has 4 or 5 others that i will check out. anyway, i love a book that is so steeped in atmosphere that i feel that i am there, or want to be. there are some places that have that feel if an author is capable of bringing it to life - new england, alaska or the arctic, and in this case, the south. the story was compelling, the characters were interesting and i liked them, and i didn't want to put it down. i guessed at some things and was surprised by others, but the story was so interesting that i wasn't just rushing to get to the climax. i enjoyed the journey. the book was historical, as well, which added a lot of interest. i just think it would be fascinating to find oneself in the position of the main character, searching through clues and researching to get to know someone now gone who left secrets behind. very cool.
