Don't Cry
by Mary Gaitskill
by Mary Gaitskill
"Mirror Ball" is probably the worst story I've ever read in my life, and then there was this upswing where the stories grew increasingly more astonishing as the book went on. This is a lot of what I love about Gaitskill--her bold capacity for failure juxtaposed with her concise and cutting sentences, and her refusal to coddle her characters. She constantly takes risks as a writer, and I admire this greatly.
