This is my first exposure to Jorge Luis Borges in any form - Dr. Brodie's Report a collection of short stories. Borges develops wonderfully rich characters set mostly in the Argentinean underworld. The stories are brutal. They are filled with stereotypical macho men (saber carrying mustached men), bloodletting for no reason. The best story of the collection, Dr. Brodie's Report, reminded me of Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
