it was amazing

Written in the 50s and still widely read today. Runciman was a pioneer of modern crusading history. Although there were plenty of learned articles floating about in high brow journals, Runciman was the first to write an effective synthesis, and did a lot of his own original research. Its a testament to history writing.

I've read all three volumes, and each is written with the same remarkable work ethic, candour of language and sheer honesty. A remarkable historian and quite possible the greatest piece of history writing since the 50s.
