A lovely book. Sort of Israeli magic realism. The descriptions of people are frequently humorous, and the descriptions of actions--building a dovecote, making sure that tiles in a house are level--give the book a sense of wonder, as if a child was seeing the action for the first time. It's a romance of a kind, with some very harsh passages.
