This maybe seems like a generous allocation of stars? But it is not. I struggled with the first half of this book, kinda didn't catch me, something about the flibbertygibbit structure, but eventually it hit, and I'm so glad. It'd be an easy book to overlook--boo hoo hoo, a GIRL talking about BOYS--oh but therein lies how wonderful it is. E. Lockhart, she just gives her characters this ability to be so honest and plain and genuine in their feelings, and in how their feelings make them feel worse about things. And something about the way she writes about young adult relationships really, really works for me. The mixed-up feelings, the things that are absolutely so important even though you KNOW better, the care that people take with the details and the betrayal they feel when the details go unnoticed. I mean it just makes you want to say, High Fidelity can take a flying leap.

Also although the parents were a little bit more caricature than character, I appreciated the attempt to really tie them into Ruby's story, active participants in her development instead of common passers-by.

Anyway there's a lot of truth in this book. Even me as a big scary adult had a hard time reading some of the observations without feeling sort of profoundly sad.

PS when Noel grows up I call dibs.
