Yeesh. Thank god that's over.

Plenty of blood, sex and magic. We're just missing the sugar. But it was mostly blood. People talk a lot about how much sex there is in these books, but I really think there's more blood than anything.
And court politics, which if that's you're thing then this series is probably a wet dream, but I find it tedious and exhausting. Or maybe it's just the way Hamilton writes it, as though both her characters and her readers are kind of dense and everything needs to be explained and re-explained and overexplained again 20 times. Laurell, I have a new vocabulary word for you: subtlety. Look it up.

At least Hamilton gave up any guise of an actual plot (remember when Merry pretended to be a private investigator?) and just stuck to the sex and politics. Apparently Merry is now channeling some ancient goddess and every time she does the deed with someone, she awakens their old, lost powers. And sometimes new ones. So of course, everyone wants a piece. And with Merry, everyone who wants a piece can have it. According to Rhys, Merry's very very good in bed. She'd have to be. And there's even some girl on girl!

And of course, Merry adds considerably to her harem. She hasn't had sex with them all yet, though, so there are some new (boring, mundane yet hyperbolic) sex scenes to look forward to in future books. That's probably my biggest complaint about the series, aside from the excessive blood (ew!). Everyone talks about how much sex there is, how these books are essentially erotica or "fairy porn." Well, yeah, but that would be fine if the sex scenes were actually hot. But they're not. They're just as tedious as everything else in these books.

There were one or two lighter moments, but really this book was screaming for some fun. It needs more humor, more fun, more play and less constant mirror negotiating and tiptoeing around the queen and cataclysmic sex and ripping people's throats open with your very special hand.

Bottom line: This series, and this book in particular, is exhausting and gross. The only redeeming quality I can think of is that I sort of mildly like two or three of Merry's guards. That's it really. And yet if I were a gambling girl, I'd probably bet money that I'll eventually read or listen to the next book in the series. I don't know why. I'm a glutton for punishment, I guess.
