Gory details of parasitic infections like tapeworm, guinea worms, and leishmaniasis help make this a high-interest introduction to the study and treatment of infectious diseases. Filled with pictures and a colorful, if somewhat busy, presentation, this informs in a conversational, hip tone without denigrating the victims or the seriousness of their infections. Real-life case studies examine the parasite, its dangers and treatment; in all medical sleuthing leads to discovery and treatment. The profiles draw in the reader and move the narrative along. Along with the case studies, medical professionals fighting these infectious diseases are also highlighted. Readers are encouraged to consider either a medical career or others that also help fight these diseases. One of Franklin Watts’ 24/7 Science Behind the Scenes series, the focus is on science as inquiry in today’s world. Sure to appeal to its target audience, this will appeal to both their grosser and altruistic sides.
