The story is about a boy named Thomas J. Ward who is the seventh son of a seventh son and he is destined to be the apprentice of a Spook. A Spook, is someone the townspeople not only fear but someone who acts to get rid of evil that lurks; witches, boggarts and ghasts.

Thomas is a character the reader will enjoy he's; courageous, willing and understanding. Yet he is only a young kid. His parents are hard-working, and want the best for their children. Both parents teach and help Thomas on being the apprentice of the Spook. This part of the story leaves you feeling warm-hearted.

In contrast, there's a witch known as Mother Malkin who causes much mayhem and is trapped in a pit barricaded with bars. Her presence will leave you with goosebumps! Thomas is caught in having a promise with a girl named Alice which leads him to Mother Madkim. And she is everything the Spook has told him about to not go near.

You're told not read this at night and yet I still do. I'm sure you will to. Just letting you know, your blankets won't be enough to hide you from the thrill and haunted creatures from this book.
