I started out really wanting to like this book. It is the first in a popular series, and I really like to find a series that appeals to me because then I have a ready source of fresh material that I know I'll like.

However, about 2/3 of the way through, I realized that it's really a romance novel disguised as historical/sci-fi. It seems like every scene is really just manufactured to provide a backdrop for another romantic interlude, unless it's an attempted rape.

Putting aside the time-traveling aspect, which I'm willing to do, other parts of the plot were just ludicrous. A 19-year old 18th century Scot who'd been a soldier and mercenary for several years: a virgin? I think not.

If you like romance novels, you'll probably like this one. It has a little more substance than most. Otherwise, I can't recommend it.
