In the books I've read about Iraq, there are references to recent eras of progressiveness and prosperity- for Iraq it's the mid 70s up to the Iran-Iraq war, for Afghanistan the 50s and 60s up to the point of Soviet domination. I think it is encouraging that better times exist in living memory, it counters the sense of permanent poverty and illiteracy and violence gained from only looking at the current state or past decade or two.
