How much do I love these characters? More than I can say. Ed is a clever punk who just wants to look out for his younger brother; Al is a sweetie who's not afraid to kick Ed's butt when he gets too ridiculous. In this volume we also meet Riza, who's definitely got everyone's number, and Roy, who's a total dork (but loveably so).

The stories in volume one don't flow particularly well, but they do give you a good idea of how smart the Elric brothers are and how their world works. Ed and Al explain their alchemal attempt to bring their mother back to life, and the dire consequences of their mistake; now they're searching for the Philosopher's Stone, hoping to rebuild their bodies.

The really good stuff is later, but the introduction ain't too shabby in its own right.
