it was amazing
bookshelves: historical-fiction, newberry

This is a sweet little Newberry Award winner (1996, I believe). It was a bare hundred pages, so I read it in about an hour. It was a nice story about an orphan girl who is taken in by an apparently mean-spirited midwife. As we find out, though, the midwife and the girl both have more to them than meets the eye. The story has a good moral not to run when things get difficult.

I liked that Cushman included author's notes in the end for those who might want a little more history. It gives them a good place to start if they want to look up more information.
