** spoiler alert ** "The way out is down!"

Alan Carpentier returns to Hell proper after seeing Benito Mussolini escape. Why linger in Hell when you can get out? Because spiritually, morally, philosophically, Carpentier needs to know that any one can get out.

Niven & Pournelle use the backdrop of their original Inferno to further discuss the purpose and implications of hell. What is the point of eternal torture? Is it really eternal?

The authors explore these (and other) ideas intelligently, providing excellent contemporary allegories, vivid description, and snappy dialogue.

The writing was addictive - I blazed through the hardcover back in April, and revisited it with the Audiobook version in May. Both reads were excellent. It does get a bit longwinded, but with Wikipedia handy, researching some of the characters used in the book makes for an interactive hellish adventure.
