I liked the plot and premise of this book. I like Mary's character, though she is kind of a wimp. I'd have given this 4 stars if it weren't for the seemingly gratuitous profanity in the book. It seemed to me that the author was using the F word for the sheer pleasure of saying it, as if she could defy her mom by putting it in print. It didn't have much to do with the plot, dialog, or anything else. I'm not a prude. I just think that some authors pour it on like pouring heaps of salt or ketchup on food instead of taking the time to season food correctly in the first place. Later books in this series are far more balanced, and that's nice. You need to read this one first though because the books kind of build on each other. If you get this as an audio book, just wear headphones if your kids are around.
