it was ok
bookshelves: dealing, mystery-atmospheric, novel-or-story-collection

I could barely put this National book award finalist down once I began but in the end it left me unsatisfied. The huge, satisfying resolution I felt surely had to be coming never really made it. It seemed intricately plotted but basically it came down to all eight or so main characters improbably (more and more so) colliding with each other. It does have a ton of hooks, including sharply drawn interior emotions and motive, and a vague menace that keeps you racing along when you’re not sure Mr. Z will turn out to be a mass murderer, a terrorist, or just a child rapist. I found some of the swarthy unwashed terrorist descriptions way too broad too; even though, as the author points out in an afterword, she finished the book before 9/11.
