At least once a year I get the impulse to push my life aside and travel through Europe like Hemingway. It seems a foolish notion when you consider how ultimately un-fulfilling Jake Barnes finds his experiences in this novel. Despite the book's pessimistic view of life in the modern world, Hemingway does such a good job fleshing out the details of the settings and the atmosphere that, to me at least, this book has very little to do with Jake, Brett, Cohn and Romero, and everything to do with sidewalk cafes, last-minute excursions and Paris at night.
