Ok, here's the deal. I downloaded this book to my Kindle on a whim. Just looking for a bit of sci-fi/fantasy to test out my new book-reading device.
It took 10-20 pages. I almost gave up on it. But then I got hooked on the nature of the core character. Kinda Harry Potter-ish in that the hero is archetypal in character.
There are bits of the book that seem indulgent. Some of the narrative around describing scenes and backstory seemed unnecessary, but I appreciated the author's attention to detail and commitment to visualizing the world. I just skimmed some of those bits. ;-)
If you like fantasy, it's totally readable. I enjoyed it, and blasted through it once I got into it.
I'm reading the sequel, if that's any indication of how I felt about it.

I am on page 90 and am not sure whether to throw it to the curb or not. It is just starting to get interesting. I understand your review. I notice that there are a total of 6 books about the bastid. That is kind of disheartening. Do you think you'll read the third? I am kind of annoyed at how LOOONNNNNGGGG it is taking to catch my attention. 370 pages to go...maybe
