I really like Greg Iles and this is one of his better books.

The Quiet Game has Penn Cage returning home after his wife's death to find peace and rest for himself and daughter. Instead, he finds his father's health failing due to a blackmail scheme and himself the target of an unidentified killer.

The plot revolves around racism, corrupt politics and lawmen, and a town who plays "the quiet game" for many different reasons.

It's also a pretty good (albeit brief) civil rights history lesson - some correlations I never learned in school. Lots of historical players - assasinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, Hoover's reign over the FBI, Nixon's run for presidency, Mississippi's unpredictable party line voting, etc.
