The first book was very very good. Fascinating fantasy world (almost an alternate reality, really) and interesting characters. Halfway through book two, Pullman gets really preachy and annoying. It's hard with the cliffhanger, but just read the first book if you can.

I agree. The second book was bad and the third book was laughable. I liked the first, though. It was neat-o.

Sandi I actually thought the first one got unbearably preachy when Lyra found her father and he started lecturing her about Original Sin and Dust. I gave up then.

Yes, Pullman always has an agenda, throughout, but the first one still felt like a story to me. His treatment of god in the very end was so juvenile and idiotic it reminded me of when I taught 5th grade writing and the kids would try to write fantasy epics (this was mid-LOTR hubbub).

Manny I thought the take-home from both this and C.S. Lewis's Perelandra was that it's actually not so easy to improve Paradise Lost. Surprise!
