I liked a lot about this book, but it was a slow and difficult read. A very early serial work of Charles Dickens, it was mostly interesting to see how his writing style and storytelling developed throughout the over 800 pages. One of my favorite parts was a chapter that gave a very interesting sketch of what would later become "A Christmas Carol."

The introduction was a bit too effusive for my taste. The characters were very interesting and well defined, if not as delightful, charming, and touching as Bernard Darwin wanted me to believe. (I was, indeed, able to read the last chapter without crying). A fine read for a long quiet winter, but not something you want to take to the beach!
