really liked it
bookshelves: newbery, middle-school-mix
Read in March, 2009

The opening scene is wonderfully scary, Bod and his family are very appealing, and just when I was thinking, there aren't enough "funny bits" (as Matilda says), well, there they were, though perhaps not as many as one might wish. But the ending didn't quite satisfy--leaving it open to sequels apparently. I am eager to see how my students take to this one.

Casey I thought the explanation for the Jacks felt a little expedient, but I really loved the book, so I ignored this.

Lisbeth Solberg Yeah, that was short shrift about the Jacks, but there are more out there right? Waiting for book two or three? I thought Miss Lupescu deserved more than a mere "she fought bravely."
