Inspired by a story the author heard, and the Part III of the novella is the basis of Bizet's opera. Carmen enjoys torturing men mentally and manipulating them, but Mérimée's characterization makes her just an immature kid who stamps her feet when she gets mad, instead of the mysterious, alluring and seductive Gypsy that I can only presume she was meant to be. Still, at the same time none of the characters are fleshed out, and the story itself is thin as a straw.
