Hands down one of the most challenging, complex, hilarious comics I've ever read, "High Society" takes the basic template of the early Cerebus comics (Cerebus is a smart, skilled, callous bastard who nevertheless has some basic understanding of decency, even if it's usually motivated by self-service) and explodes it. The politics are as absurd (Cerebus runs for Prime Minister against a goat) as they are well-researched (voting for the goat is a viable option because the city-state sponsoring that candidate is soon expected to annex their city-state due to overwhelming debt). But mostly, the characters are vibrant, the quality of the art, mixing thick, kinetic brushstrokes with extreme detail and using page layout in innovative ways, is fantastic, and it's one of the funniest things I've read since Confederacy of Dunces. I was almost blacking out from laughing during the election. Awesome.
